Based on the Geologists Syndicate’s commitment to developing scientific standards in the field of earth sciences, ensuring adherence to standard scientific controls in the field of geological stratigraphy in Iraq, and avoiding the chaos of adopting new or different names for geological formations or proposing changes to existing formations without sufficient scientific support, the Geologists Syndicate formed a committee on September 19, 2023, called the Iraqi Geological Stratigraphy Committee. This committee was tasked with preparing a comprehensive and integrated study of geological formations in Iraq. The committee has made significant progress in holding workshops and organizing field visits, achieving significant progress in this important scientific field. This project aims to understand the nature and extent of geological formations, including those with economic returns for Iraq, which include Iraq’s natural resources (minerals, ores, water, and oil). This will then help achieve an optimal and best strategy for extracting natural resources and maximizing profitability, thus providing the best benefits to Iraqi society and the economy.<\/p>

Historical Overview:<\/h3>

The Iraqi Stratigraphy Commission (CSI) was established and began its work in the late 1970s after Iraq participated in a portion of the International Commission on Stratigraphy’s research projects, including the Phosphate and Stratigraphic Distribution Project. It continued its intermittent work, focusing on contributing to international projects, but work faltered and ceased in the late 1990s.
In mid-2013, the Iraqi Stratigraphy Commission was revived to resolve the stratigraphic interpretations, confusion over stratigraphic nomenclature, and the resulting problems. Unfortunately, the Commission never saw the light of day due to administrative issues, in addition to the subsequent ISIS terrorist attacks. The Commission remained suspended and inactive.
In early 2023, the revival of this national commission was discussed again, and the Geologists Syndicate\/General Center issued Resolution No. 53\/17\/23 forming the commission and naming its chairman and members. Several workshops were held at the Geologists Syndicate headquarters, the University of Anbar, and the University of Baghdad, in addition to a field visit to Sulaymaniyah to verify some rock formations.<\/p>

Project Benefits:<\/h4>

1- Collection and Analysis of Geological Data: Compiling comprehensive and accurate data to build a database on the various geological formations in Iraq, with the aim of improving the accuracy and timeliness of available geological information.
2- Identification and Characterization of Geological Layers: Studying and characterizing the various geological layers to determine their properties and importance.
3- Supporting the Oil Industry: Providing accurate geological data that contributes to improving oil exploration and extraction operations.
4- Mineral Resources Exploration: Identifying sites rich in precious metals, minerals, and industrial ores.
5- Water Management: Guiding strategies for managing water resources in scientific and sustainable ways.
6- Natural Resources Development: Supporting the efficient and sustainable extraction and use of natural resources.
7- Building Geological Models: Creating detailed geological models to illustrate the spatial distribution of geological formations and resources.
8- Cooperation with Stakeholders: Working with national and international institutions to achieve project objectives and exchange knowledge and expertise.
9- Providing Exploration Recommendations: Directing exploration, development, and extraction efforts based on available geological findings to improve resource utilization efficiency.
10- Developing National Capacities: Building national geology capabilities through continuous training and development, and adopting them according to international standards to match those of neighboring countries.<\/p>

Project Implementation Phases:<\/h4>

1- Data Collection: Collaborating with research institutions and geological bodies to collect the necessary data (3 months).
2- Data Analysis: Using advanced tools and techniques to analyze the collected data (6 months).
3- Data Consolidation: Integrating analyzed data into central databases (3 months).
4- Reporting: Publishing the final results and recommendations.<\/p>

Challenges and Risks:<\/h4>

1- Technical Challenges: Difficulty collecting and analyzing large amounts of data.
2- Financial Challenges: Securing sufficient funding.
3- Logistical Challenges: Coordination among various stakeholders.<\/p>

Project Implementation Requirements:<\/h4>

To create a suitable environment for this work, the following must be provided:
1- Human Resources: Form specialized teams in geology and the environment to collect, analyze, and document information.
2- Technology: Use the latest technologies and software to collect, analyze, and document data and create geological models.
3- International Cooperation: Strengthen partnerships with international academic and research institutions.
